It's time to plan your
family holidays in January! This is the off season for vacations and when it
comes to traveling to New York, there is no better time to plan that holiday
vacation than in this wonderful time of year. New York is a fabulous state in
the northeast U.S., best known for its spectacular New York City skyline and
majestic Niagara Falls. NYC's island of Manhattan features the Empire State
Building, Times Square, Central Park and the glamorous Brooklyn Bridge.
To the east, Long
Island has more spectacular beaches, including those near Connecticut
Riverhead, Myrtle Beach and Westhampton Beach. To the north lies Lake George,
which offers fishing, water sports, sailing, boating and great winter
destinations like Southing and Patchogue. The region's most celebrated national
holiday is Columbus' St. Patrick's Day. There are also regional holidays in
Bucks county, Connecticut; Binghamton and Hampton Roads Virginia; West Virginia
and Pennsylvania.
A weekend filled with
excitement as the nation marks the twenty-first century mark of the holidays in
January! What better way to start off the New Year than with a trip to
celebrate Independence Day! Celebrated in all fifty states, Independence Day is
the one day on which the United States of America was formed. On this special
day, a national holiday commission is designated to plan the grand celebration.
It is the most popular holiday in the nation and attracts millions of visitors.
What better way to celebrate
Independence Day than by watching a festival? The New England CapeHawks is
among the organizations planning a "Fiesta of the South" in
Portland's Waterfront Park starting on the evening of July fourth. Music and
food will feature as part of the festival, which goes on through the month of
July and into August. Early in August the first of the seven annual Portland
Art Association Summer Workshops will take place at the Portland Art Museum.
Featuring local artists and musical talent, this workshop is the highlight of
the summer for arts and culture enthusiasts.
The National Cherry
Blossom Month is celebrated in the middle of February with parades, street
celebrations and the giving of black and red roses. The United States Coast
Guard announces the beginning of a new year with the ringing of chimes at a
different tune each time the Washington DC clocks chime. At the beginning of
April, the fourth week of the new year, marks the beginning of National
Volunteer Week. It is celebrated with much gusto by the thousands of voluntary
service workers who participate in many tasks, including parades, fundraisers
and community service events.
There are many more
national and regional holidays celebrated throughout the year. All are an
exciting way to celebrate our liberties and freedoms. Whether celebrating
Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas, there are no holidays that can be compared
to the magic of true American traditions like the ones mentioned above.
