How Do You Choose Between Maintenance-Free and Maintenance-Free Automotive Batteries?

 

The main difference between conventional and maintenance-free automotive batteries is the design. The former has a thicker, more durable construction with plate grids that are coated with lead or cadmium to prevent corrosion. The latter is commonly known as lead-calcium. Its thicker construction also reduces fluid loss, ensuring a long lifespan. This type of battery is best for cars and other heavy-duty applications. Its construction is very similar to conventional automotive batteries, but utilizes heavy-duty parts and processes.



The chemical reaction between the sulfuric acid and water that forms an automotive battery is a cycle that occurs thousands of times over the battery's lifetime. Each cycle reduces the capacity of the battery, which decreases cold-cranking amps. Deep discharging is when the electrical systems in a car are shut off. During this process, sulfuric acid can attach to the lead and damage the plates. Therefore, it is imperative to maintain the proper level of sulfuric acid within the automotive batteries solution.

The chemistry of lead-acid batteries is based on a process known as electrolysis. This process changes the chemical components in a battery to release energy. The electrolyte is an acid solution that reacts with lead oxide ions to create a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction between lead and zinc produces an energy-dense substance that powers a vehicle. A typical lead-acid battery has enough Pb and PbO2 ions in the electrolyte to maintain a high charge for a long time.

The main difference between an AGM is in the type of material used. The former uses a liquid electrolyte solution to prevent leakage. It provides consistent coverage of electrolyte around the lead plates and is virtually maintenance-free. However, it is more prone to irregular voltages, so it is important to replace the battery before it reaches its end of life. So, how do you choose between a gel-based and an AGM battery?

Lead-acid batteries are the most common type of automotive batteries, but there are also AGM batteries. The former is more expensive, but it is a good alternative to standard AGM. Its unique design makes it possible to store more energy than a conventional battery. It also allows you to store more energy, meaning you can use a smaller car in less time. The disadvantage is that AGM batteries can't be recharged easily and need to be replaced regularly.

The most common type of automotive batteries is flooded or conventional. The AGM battery is more durable than the former, but it still has some disadvantages. AGM auto batteries are more expensive than standard wet cells. AGM auto batteries are more durable but they are also more expensive than conventional batteries. The flooded type of auto battery is called a traditional lead-acid battery. AGMs are not as popular as AGMs because they are more costly to replace than standard ones.
